Crane Elementary School District schools will be receiving solar power arrays on their campuses in the near future.
The Crane governing board unanimously approved a power purchase agreement with Smart Energy Capital to install solar power arrays at five district schools, pending finalization of locations.
As the agreement currently stands, the solar arrays will be installed at Centennial Middle, Crane Middle, Valley Horizon Elementary, Mesquite Elementary and Gary Knox Elementary schools. The arrays will be installed in the form of covered parking, shade structures and some ground-mounted solar panels.
“Smart Energy is required to provide guaranteed energy savings to the district of $835,000 over the 25-year term of the agreement for the five schools,” stated the agenda item.
Mike Wicks, executive director of management services, added that the arrays are projected to produce at least 85 percent of the schools' electricity needs and are expected to be installed by the spring of 2013.
